Ilya Azar graduated from the Department of Applied Political Science at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow and started his career in journalism as a correspondent for the politics section of Gazeta.Ru. He then worked as a special correspondent for Lenta.ru, Meduza, and Novaya Gazeta. Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, he has collaborated with Novaya Gazeta Europe. He writes long-form articles on social and political topics and conducts in-depth interviews with politicians. Azar co-hosts a Russian-language podcast on journalism, Davayte Golosom, and is the editor in chief of Lenivka, a Moscow district newspaper. He has hosted his own interview show on TV Rain. Azar received two Redkollegia awards for his work. From 2017 to 2022, he was a municipal deputy for the Khamovniki district in Moscow. He also created the Picketman project that uses crowdfunding to pay the fines for one-person protests.
